Mexican President Defends Creation of the National Guard

Mexico needs the support of the Army and the Navy in the fight to end violence, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reiterated today when defending the creation of the National Guard.

In his usual morning press conference at the National Palace, the Mexican President reiterated that they presented an initiative 'and that is what we want to be taken into consideration and they are already been seen, by members of the executive, in a respectful way.'

'We have said, -he said-, that we need the support of the Army and the Navy to face the serious problem of violence, we do not want simulators, we are not going to accept laws that do not solve the problem and we do not want a reissue of the federal police that does not work.'

'The state police must be strengthened, and that is not the responsibility of the president. Peace and tranquility must be guaranteed and that can not be done if the executive is completely bound by the Constitution which does not allow the Armed Forces to deal with public security,' he said.

'We have the backing, the support of the Armed Forces and the understanding and acceptance that human rights will be guaranteed and respected and that moderate force will be used.

'We can legally count on all the elements to face the main problem of the country that is insecurity, that there are no homicides or robberies, and the issue is so important that all the governors support it, including those of opposition, but not the legislators,' said the President.

'They are not numbers or statistics, they are human beings, the murdered, the kidnapped, and before that it is known that one has a great responsibility to guarantee peace and security and I accepted that challenge,' he finally said.
