Humans with Rights

''Humans with Rights'' is the motto of the XXI International Biennial of Graphic Humor, to be held from March 31 to April 3, in San Antonio de los Baños and Havana.

Jorge Legañoa, vice president of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (Upec) and member of the Organizing Committee of the Biennial, presented the program of the graphic humor party in Cuba.

The activities will begin on March 22 with a concert for peace in the Humor Park in San Antonio de los Baños. The exhibition "50 años" for the anniversary of Dedeté, the exhibition "Melaíto 50", for the five decades of this humorous publication from Villa Clara, the presentation of the book "Jape vs Martirena 0 to 0" of the Editorial La Luz de Holguín, the collective exhibition "El Caballero de París: la leyenda que camina" and the collective exhibition of Palante "La Habana, Ciudad Maravilla", are some of the activities prior to the International Biennial that will begin on March 31 just when the town of Ariguanabo participate in the inaugural parade and begin the development of the collective mural Human rights.

The jury is composed of the Cuban specialist Zenaida Manes Rodríguez; the Belgian artist Cécile Bertrand Liege; Liza Donnelly, American caricaturist and writer; graphic humor historian Osvaldo Macedo de Sousa from Portugal; from El Salvador the caricaturist Carlos Alfredo Ruiz Moisa; the film and manga critic Kósei Ono from Japan and from Cuba Alfredo Martirena Hernández Lorenzo, illustrator and graphic humorist, winner of the Third Prize in the previous edition of the Biennial.

Isel Chacón Díaz, director of the Museum of Humor, spoke about the presentation of the catalog and the exhibitions that will take place in Havana prior to the event. The venues of the program will be the José Martí Memorial, the Casa del ALBA Cultural, the Sala Villena de la Uneac, the International Institute of Journalism and the Upec headquarters.

More than 1300 works by almost 500 artists were received. The jury selected 299 works by 209 authors from 43 countries, most of them in digital format (Political Satire 137 works, General Humor 83, Personal Caricature 32, Cartoon 38 and Photography 9). The country with the largest number of works and authors is Cuba, followed by Turkey and Iran. The topics are diverse, human rights and different contents were addressed in an interesting way.

Three prizes will be awarded per category and the mentions determined by the jury. There are a large number of institutions that will grant collateral prizes. In addition to the Eduardo Abela Grand Prize, the Popularity Prize will be awarded by the Museum of Humor, the Fondo de Bienes Culturales (Cultural Assets Fund), the Association of Craftsmen and Artists of Cuba (ACAA), the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Cultural Center, the Uneac, the Posada family and others, "said the director of the Museum of Humor.

Once again the International Biennial of Graphic Humor is inserted in the cultural panorama of San Antonio de los Baños and Cuba. The cartoonists of the world come together to make a call to the equality of men and women of our planet, demanding respect for human rights, from photography, humor and the graphic arts.

The Los Cuenteros Puppet Theater Company  celebrated its 50th anniversary this November 19 at the Museum of Humor, located in San Antonio de los Baños, with the exhibition ''Fifty years telling stories''.
