Havana - Housing construction is one of the main challenges Cuba is facing due to its social impact, a priority on the agenda of President Miguel Diaz-Canel, Granma newspaper reported on Monday.

The newspaper summarizes a recent meeting the Head of State presided over to follow up the issue. He complained about insufficient results in the house construction program to solve the problem in the island, where there is a housing deficit of almost one million houses, according to official sources.

Diaz-Canel stated that the government visits to the Cuban provinces, which entered its second cycle in March with those carried out to Santiago de Cuba and Havana, will include 'a rigorous check on construction plans.'

The president also announced the quarterly publication in the press of the results of each province and its municipalities on this matter.

Another prioritized work by the President is the elimination of obstacles and bureaucratic mechanisms that delay the efforts related to housing, including the delivery of Certificate of Living Conditions.

According to data published in Granma newspaper, Cuba has about 3,825,000 houses, about 40 percent are classified as regular or poor technical condition.

About 2,568,267 houses have been built in Cuba after the Revolution triumphed on January 1, 1959.
