21st International Biennial of Graphic Humor in Havana

On the occasion of the 21st International Biennial of Graphic Humor Cuba 2019, a theoretical meeting was held at the José Martí International Institute of Journalism in Havana.

It was a magnificent exchange on graphic humor in Cuba, according to the concept of several theorists, among them Enrique Amador (Kike Quiñones), director of the Centro de Promoción del Humor. During this meeting, the actor compared the criterion on graphic humor of several theorists, based on the images, the typology and the objective. Kike explained important elements about contemporary Cuban stage humor as a way of creation.

Greta Espinosa, journalist and Master at the Central University in Las Villas, presented a very interesting research on the use of resources to treat the most diverse issues affecting Cubans, taking as reference the humor publication Melaíto, Villa Clara, which celebrated its 50th anniversary. Espinosa also explained the use of graphic symbols and expressive resources such as metaphor, antithesis, paradox, allegory, through examples of the Melaíto to highlight the problems that afflict the population.

Jorge A Piñero (Jape), a prominent Cuban cartoonist, referred to the audiovisual project ''Espejo de Tinta'', which includes the work of cartoonists such as Ángel Boligán, Arístides Hernández Guerrero (Ares), Blanquito, Reynerio Tamayo, Juan Padrón and other creators from Cuba. The project is linked to Cinesoft (Ministry of Education) and highlights the importance of Cuban graphic humor and its use in the Cuban press.

The inauguration of the collective exhibition entitled ''Fritanga con Burundanga'' took place at the Casa de la Prensa, in Havana. It is made up of works by Cuban and Puerto Rican cartoonists, among them: Kike Estrada, Arturo Yépez, Gary Javier, Carlos Aponte. The exhibition advocates the freedom of Puerto Rico and highlights the solidarity of our country with this nation.

The Cannibal Planet exhibition by Reynerio Tamayo, one of the most prominent artists in contemporary Cuban visual arts, was inaugurated at the UNEAC Salon. The theme represents the avidity of the human being to destroy nature. Tamayo uses colors such as red, black, gray, green and yellow to highlight a theme that concerns everyone, due to its importance to preserve the life of the species on the planet.
