Six decades of historical ties between Cuba and Ghana

Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee, received on the afternoon of April 5, his Excellency Mr. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, on an official visit to our country.During the cordial meeting, they recalled the historic ties that bind our country to Africa, in particular to Ghana, the first nation on the continent to establish relations with Cuba after the triumph of the Revolution. In recalling the 60th anniversary of that event, the two leaders reiterated the sentiments of solidarity and brotherhood shared by their governments and peoples.

The previous day, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, President of Cuba’s Councils of State and of Ministers, received His Excellency Mr. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and discussed the positive state of bilateral relations and confirmed the will to promote political ties and collaboration. They additionally discussed other topics of regional and international interest.

The distinguished visitor was accompanied on both occasions by Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Education, and Ambassador to Cuba, Napoleon Abdulai. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey and Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, ministers of Foreign Affairs and Regional and Health Integration, respectively, were also present at the meeting between Presidents.

On the Cuban side, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla was present at both meetings; while the ministers of Foreign Trade and Investment, Higher Education, and Public Health: Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz, José Ramón Saborido Loidi ,and José Ángel Portal Miranda, respectively; as well as the ambassador in Ghana, Pedro Luis Despaigne González, participated in the Presidential meeting.
