My April fire

As a child I fought with a girl in my classroom, who laughed at a friend because she had lice. That malignant and mocking beast won me by far in size. I lied not to say that I felt good about doing justice, and the director, who knew me, laughed.

"She will always be at war for others. If that girl was born on the date of Giron events and lives with her fire, how could she not be like that? "

At that time I did not understand anything. Since I was a third grader , Playa Girón week only meant for me a seven- days vacations.

The years of studying Cuba history came, and I learned almost by heart the curious and sometimes even incredible anecdotes about the events of April 1961, of those who fought there and what it meant to live with the fire of Giron.

So was that struggle, and that was the bravery of those days ... of facing any enemy, no matter how big or how much it surpassed us, to take care of the true subjects of our conquests, to the people; for those convictions it was worth dying, as thousands of Cubans did.

If I had to interview the fighters of that feat, I would imagine myself waiting for them to come out of their daze because of the strong combat ... and the joy of seeing a whole people in uniform defending their rights.

That historic victory of 1961 was achieved in less than 72 hours; our forces gave no respite even for a minute. Then the United States Government tried again; had not they learned the lesson?

There are battles that are urgent, just, necessary or irresistible, they are always remembered and leave teachings for life, like those of my Homeland.

These battles keep in our hearts and minds to pay tribute. April is for us a victorious month, April of anecdotes and stories of courage, bloody spring but of triumph, April of glories and reunions, April accomplice, April of the people.

I still continue with my just doctrines of struggle, and Girón continues to be my fire, like the Homeland that Cubans defend.
