Spanish Foreign Minister Denounces Tightening of US Blockade of Cuba

Madrid - Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell on Wednesday described as arbitrary the US attitude to tighten its economic sanctions on Cuba by enforcing extraterritorial laws.
In an interview granted to Television Española, Borrell referred to US President Donald Trump's decision to activate Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, which further tightens Washington's blockade of Cuba.
According to the head of Spanish diplomacy, the full enforcement of the Helms-Burton Act, which came into force on May 2, 2019, is another example of the lack of cooperation by the Government of the United States.
It is the adoption of extraterritorial measures that in our opinion constitute an 'abuse of power', the Spanish foreign minister stressed.
Borrell pointed out that the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act 'will open a juridical-legal battle' that will include lawsuits before the World Trade Organization (WTO), as the European Union (EU) announced in early May.
Borrell pointed out that it is a matter in which 'the law firms will get the largest piece', and predicted several litigations between Europe and the United States.
From now on, disputes between the EU and the US over that law will be settled in WTO courts, because that is what multilateral authorities are for, he noted.
'The United States does not like multilateralism, but the alternative is a relation of force and power and we do not support that,' the Spanish foreign minister said after strongly condemning the full enforcement of the Helms-Burton Act.
