Artemisa, Cuba - The Municipal Road Safety Commission in San Antonio de los Baños reinforces the actions to reduce the traffic accident rates in which young people may be involved. The Driving and Road Education School, located in this territory, strengthens educational actions, as the only way to be responsible and comply with Law 109 of the Road Safety Code.
Alexis García Chiong, Traffic officer in the province of Artemisa, explained that "young people are prone to accidents due to the high circulation of motorcycles, without a driver's license or helmet." He also noted that alcohol consumption and speed competitions are other factors that enable the occurrence of these unfortunate events.
The Batalla del Jigüe Pre-university Institute is one of the centers where most of these actions are promoted since many of its students drive motorcycles. In this regard, the Driving and Road Education School has collaborated in the preparation of parents, students and teachers. At the beginning of the school year they were informed about their role on the road and the consequences of these traffic accidents. Likewise, the creation of a specialized classroom was proposed, so that the students know the established regulations and become familiar with the contents on road education taught by this center.
García Chiong highlighted the initiative by the National Traffic Department to conduct annual campaigns on the risk factors that lead to traffic accidents. Reflecting on the responsibility of young people on the road is not only the responsibility of the authorities in charge of ensuring compliance with Law 109 of Road Safety, but also parents and teachers. Everything that is achieved will be beneficial for them and the rest of the drivers or pedestrians. "Giving way to life is the most effective way, if we want to promote responsibility in a public space as important as this" - concluded Chiong.
