Brazilians Deserve to Live in a Better, Fairer Country', Lula Says
Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ensured that Brazilians deserve to live in a better and fairer country, through a message sent to greeting to the Union of Metallurgists of the ABC that celebrated its 60th anniversary. On the 60th anniversary of our Union, I want to tell you that I never forgot where I came from and that, even from where I am unfairly imprisoned, I never stopped fighting', wrote Lula in a letter read during a commemorative event held Sunday at the headquarters of the entity, in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Sao Paulo.

He recalled the historic metalworkers' strike in Scania in 1978 that shook the dictatorship (1964-1985) and represented a milestone in Brazilian unionism.

'Forty-one years ago, on May 12, 1978, machines stopped at the Scania factory in Sao Bernardo do Campo. It was the beginning of the first major strike in the ABC (industrial zone) after a long period of repression and wage control. The working class raised its head and showed its strength, changing the history of the country, 'indicated the ex labor leader.

He admitted that 'for having participated in that strike and many others, I am very proud to be a member of the ABC Metalworkers Union since 1968'.

Along with you, he added, 'I learned that it is worth fighting for justice and democracy, for the rights of workers and a better life for our people, no matter how difficult the conditions of that struggle are.'

Lula was elected in 1975 President of the union, being re-elected three years later. In 1980, the union suffered an interventio and the board was dismissed, leaders were imprisoned and framed in the Law of National Security, among them Lula.

'Together, we did a lot to change our Brazil. I have faith that we will meet again to change much more because our people deserve to live in a better and fairer country', the former union leader stressed.

Lula has remained in prison since April 7, 2018 for allegedly receiving a luxurious triplex apartment in the city of Guaruja, on the coast of Sao Paulo, of the construction company OAS, in exchange for favoring the company in contracts with the State Petrobras oil company
