US Tightens Blockade on Cuba with Helms-Burton, Cubans in Canada Warn

Havana - The activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act tightens the blockade with which the United States has besieged Cuba for more than half a century, said Wednesday the Association of Cubans Residing in Toronto, Canada.

The first impact will be suffered by investors who currently have commercial relations with Cuba and those who plan to do so in the future, the goal is to frighten them, discourage them and thus close doors to Cuba, warned Julio Fonseca, its President, in an e-mail interview with Prensa Latina.

The fact that someone sues in a U.S. court people or entities not only in Cuba, but from any other country in the world,' he said, 'is evidence of the meddling and extraterritorial nature of this law that violates the sovereignty of third countries.

The Association of Cubans Resident in Toronto 'Juan Gualberto Gomez' (ACRT) rejects and condemns the application of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, stressed the director of the organization insisting that the current scenario is part of the most recent escalation of the current U.S. administration.

A statement by the group warns that Washington is trying to resurrect 'the Monroe Doctrine, through which the United States claims to be the owners of the Americas with all the powers to meddle in the internal affairs of the nations of the South.

In this sense, 'we demand the prompt revocation of this law and any other that violates Cuba's sovereignty and its capacity to carry out the programs it develops to improve the quality of life of all Cubans,' the ACRT stressed.

The 12th National Meeting of Cubans Residing in Canada will be held next Saturday and ACRT is in charge of organizing the meeting, since each year the sites alternate between Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, Fonseca said.
