Kinshasa - Ten months after it diagnosis, the 10th Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has become unstoppable, with over 1,300 deaths in 2,000 people infected, where children are a quarter of them.
The outbreak spread across several regions in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri left 1,994 infected people, including 94 likely, of them 1,329 dead and 533 healed, based on day 1´s data, the most recent ones published by the Ministry of Health.
In addition to the impossibility of slowing Ebola outbreak down, local authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO) are concerned about the unusually high number of child victims. Over than a quarter of confirmed and probable cases identified early April were children aged under 15, as against the 18 percent in West Africa (Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia) in 2013 and 2014, the most lethal outbreak in history so far.
The health sources, meanwhile, highlighted the decision made by the Ethics Committee of the School of Public Health of the University of Kinshasa to allow vaccination to pregnant women after the first three-month period and also lactating women identified as contacts.
On May 23, the aforementioned Committee switched the vaccination protocol with safety belt for rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine after verifying that from November 26, 2018, to May 26, 2019, about 319 pregnant women and 603 nursing women registered as contacts could not be immunized.
