Mexico - May was a disastrous month for the Mexican capital, which reported an increase in intentional homicides and assaults on the city streets and public transportation, local authorities admitted.
Citizens Security Secretary Jesus Orta Martinez said that two to three robberies involving bank account holders are reported every day, while intentional homicides increased 20.15 percent, from 129 cases in April to 155 in May.
Orta said that he was confident that the statistics on both crimes will decrease by late June, due to the actions taken by the Secretary in coordination with the Attorney General's Office. He added that during the said period, several individuals linked to high-impact crimes were arrested.
The official noted that a working commission was set up in conjunction with the Association of Banks of Mexico to reduce the number of robberies involving account holders.
He added that there is no evidence of any bank employee is committing these kinds of crimes, but he assured that the thieves' modus operandi is being studied, because 'no consistent patterns have been established'.
These robberies have exceeded 100,000 pesos (some 5,000 dollars) and it is not common, said Orta, adding that he has 'said that bank officials might be involved. The Association tells me that not necessarily, so we are studying them'.
He explained that after the arrests of two individuals in the neighborhood of Roma recently, who assaulted Morena Federal Lawmaker Graciela Sanchez after she withdrew 40,000 pesos from a bank, authorities are working to recover the money.
