Mexico Implements US-Mexico Immigration Agreement

Mexico - Mexico has started this Wednesday to implement the immigration agreements signed with the United States last Friday, including the deployment of the National Guard at the borders.

In his morning press conference at the National Palace, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador assured that it shows there are other ways to deal with migration, that is, the Mexican way to attack the causes that originate it and not just the use of force.

He insisted on the need to create alternatives for people so that they can work and be happy, as well as making migration optional, not forced.

That is the Mexican way, that is what we want, and that is why we accept the agreements and we are working to demonstrate to everyone that the migratory phenomenon can be addressed if there is development, if there is work, if there is well-being and justice.

He reiterated that they are already implementing those plans, those criteria that we hope and trust will produce good results.

He insisted that he does not want confrontations with the US government; we want to continue a friendly relationship and not get involved in internal politics but, on the contrary, to assert the Mexican constitutional principle of non-interference in the affairs of other countries.

Meetings have already been held with the National Guard, the Secretaries of Defense, the Navy, the Interior, and Immigration, to review details of the military deployment that begins this Wednesday with a view to fulfilling the established commitment.

In addition, the relationship with the governments of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador is being accelerated, where working groups have already been set up to address migration issues and the development plan in the region.
