Cuban FM Opens 6th CARICOM-Cuba Ministerial Meeting
Georgetown - Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez has opened the 6th Caricom-Cuba Ministerial Meeting in Georgetown this Friday with a call to consolidate ties of brotherhood among Caribbean nations.
At the meeting, which gathers Foreign Ministers, other ministers and heads of delegations, he said that the Cuban people and the government feel 'a permanent debt of gratitude for the historical and supportive support of the Caribbean Community to Cuba'.
He recalled 'the courageous document of the first four independent nations of the Caribbean, to which the rest joined, once their independence is achieved, will never be forgotten'.
Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Barbados and Jamaica re-established their relations with Cuba on December 8, 1972, an action that broke the diplomatic isolation that the United States imposed on Cuba.
The Minister emphasized that Cuba and the Caribbean have developed close historical ties and stressed that the Caricom-Cuba mechanism has contributed decisively and effectively to their strengthening.
He explained that only a few weeks ago, in a park in Havana, a monument to Caribbean heroes was unveiled 'as a symbol of the friendship that joins us and as a demonstration of recognition of the Cuban people for the women and men who made this region a group of countries with their own voice, dignity and independence in their foreign policy.
According to the Foreign Minister, in this meeting Cuba ratifies its permanent commitment to the sister nations of the Caribbean and the importance of this space for dialogue, exchange and the search for solutions to common challenges.
