Urban Agriculture for a healthy diet

Artemisa, Cuba - With the emergence of the Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture Program, organic urban farms were created in Cuba. It is an agricultural techniques that uses natural or organic waste in order to meet the  the plants' nutritional requirements.

This technique is very beneficial, as it not only improves the crops, but also helps the regeneration of the soil. In San Antonio de los Baños, organic urban farms have always played an essential role, if we take into account that they guarantee the stable production of fresh vegetables and condiments. throughout the year

The organic urban farms ''Tres Hermanos'' and ''Granja Urbana'', intensive and semi-protected orchards and farms belonging to the Agricultural Production Cooperatives Augusto César Sandino and Jorge Dimitrov ensure the local self-supply of vegetables, as well as the variety of these products in priority Public Health centers such as the Hogar Materno and the Casa de los Abuelos; and in educational centers such as child care centers and schools.

The Spring Campaign is the optimal season for the commercialization of products such as cauliflower, radish, carrot, cucumber, beetroot, celery and beans, among others.
