Congress supports candidacy of Mexico to the UN Security Council

Mexico - The Permanent Commission of Mexico''s Congress of the Union (parliament) unanimously supported the country''s candidacy for the UN Security Council, its ambassador Juan Ramón de la Fuente confirmed today.
The Permanent Commission meets during the rest periods of the Mexican congress.
The representative of Mexico before the United Nations Organization held a meeting with the Board of Directors which gave unanimous support to the candidacy to be a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the period 2020-2021.
Ambassador De la Fuente announced that, so far and formally, Mexico received the endorsement of all Latin American and Caribbean countries, with 33 votes, for the candidacy.
He added that he will talk with all the countries as part of the campaign to achieve a space in that UN body and highlight the splendid diplomatic tradition his country has.
De la Fuente stressed that it is more convenient for Mexico to participate in the Security Council than to be absent from it and comply with its resolutions, as this will give greater opportunities to find alternatives to solve such important issues as migration.
He argued that Mexico will be based on constitutional principles that guarantee that it is a country with which one can work and trust.
The members of the Board of Directors, headed by Senator Martí Batres, gave the ambassador to the UN a five-point agreement expressing their unanimous support in the election to be held in June next year.
