Uncertainty, Criticism in Guatemala over Agreement with US

Guatemala - After the signing of a migration cooperation agreement for the Guatemalan Government and a third safe country deal according to the United States, uncertainty prevails in Guatemala over its future implications.
Monday, July 29, was the deadline for the Presidency of the Republic to deliver a circumstantial report to the Constitutional Court (CC) on the signing of the controversial document that would make Guatemala an asylum for Hondurans and Salvadorans, although the agreement does not rule out that other nationalities are involved.
Lawyer Marco Vinicio Mejia filed an appeal at the CC against President Jimmy Morales, after the signing of the document on Friday at the White House by Minister of the Interior Enrique Degenhart was revealed.
Degenhart denied that the commitment was from a 'third safe country' and said that this is an international solidarity cooperation plan for migrants', a way to hide the term that raises so much dislike, especially when the negotiations were done behind the citizens' back.
The CC will also have to rule on another appeal lodged by Human Rights Attorney Jordan Rodas.
The lawmakers Orlando Blanco, from the National Unit of Hope (UNE) coalition, and Nineth Montenegro, from Encounter for Guatemala, stated that the agreement should be ratified in Congress, which will hold a session on Wednesday.
