Transportation and Volunteers, Gray as Skies in Lima 2019

Lima - The splendid opening ceremony and the quality of the facilities, stand out in the organization of the 18th Pan American Games, in contrast to transportation and volunteers, gray as Lima skies.

Remembering the nightmare with buses at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the Peruvian capital has failed to stabilize transport for the media in the continental fair, with frequent delays and little collaboration from officials.

Routes are born and die in the MPC (Main Press Center) and the IBC (for radio and television), but the schedules are almost never met at the time of return, with particularly dramatic cases for colleagues in artistic gymnastics and boxing.

In order to rationalize buses, on many occasions the previously established schedules are breached, and journalists are forced to wait two and three hours at sports facilities to the detriment of their work and rest.

The traffic in the city of more than eight million inhabitants is hellish, literally, and fears are growing that the transport of the Pan-Americans will worsen, when several holidays end in Lima.

To make the problem more critical, the spokesman for the Games, Carlos Lazarte, promises in the morning briefings that everything will improve, while the huge group of volunteers who should meet the demands of reporters, remains uninformed and oblivious.

Educated and with a big smile, the volunteers, however, seem to literally take the lead as Pan American parties that allow them selfies, a certain prominence and a tremendous inefficiency to face the problems that arise daily.

Everything is fine, everything is correct, is the first response they offer to various situations that arise. Then they assume police positions chasing journalists who dare to take small videos at sports venues, to preserve the rights of television, they say.

It is difficult for them to deliver the line-ups or rosters of the teams in the different sports disciplines, and they do not have the slightest courtesy to deliver water to the special envoys, who cannot move from their work tables.
