Birth rate increases in San Antonio de los Baños

Artemisa, Cuba - Until the end of July, the Maternal and Infant Care Program (PAMI) reaches more than 770 live births, showing an increase compared to the same period in 2018, in San Antonio de los Baños.

The Maternal and Child Care Program (PAMI) in the territory guarantees general medical care to the mother and the child. The objective of this program implies the need to deal with preventive and promotional aspects based on a comprehensive approach, taking into account the biological, psychological, socio-economic and environmental elements of the health-disease process.

One of the difficulties of the Program is the infant mortality rate with two deaths and 17 children under birth weight, with the same number of premature babies. This was stated by the head of PAMI in the municipality, Dr. Liset Duany Pulido, who also said that preventive work and risk perception of pregnant women are still insufficient.

According to the different risks during pregnancy, interconsultations are planned to monitor pregnant women. Otherwise, complementary consultations are made to prospective parents every three months. At the end of the 32 week, the Prenatal Childcare Consultation is carried out, where several issues are explained, including the development of a healthy baby, feeding, sleep, accident prevention, the importance of breastfeeding and other elements to take into account for an early diagnosis of any disorder detected.
