Argentina Deploys Large Security Operation for Primary Elections

Buenos Aires - More than 90,000 troops have been deployed on Saturday to guard and control the normal functioning of the Argentine Primary, Open, Simultaneous and Compulsory (PASO, in Spanish) elections, which will take place on Sunday.

A huge operation that includes land vehicles, aircraft and boats, as well as an important deployment on the borders, were arranged by the authorities in order to ensure a peaceful and quiet day for the primaries.

According to them, this is the largest military operation in peacetime and includes a total of 12,659 federal forces, distributed in 7,684 Gendarmerie, 4,451 naval commands, 383 Federal Police agents and 141 Airport Police in addition to 627 mobile phones, besides 65,000 people linked to them.

From La Quiaca, in the north of the province of Jujuy, up to Puerto Iguazu, in Misiones, the Border Security Zone will cover an area of two thousand kilometers to prevent foreigners from entering the nation with false documents while the presence of the security forces on the highways was also reinforced.

For these elections, the first phase with a view to the general elections in October, nearly 34 million Argentinians were authorized to exercise their right to vote and the authorities deployed a total of 185,000 ballot boxes in 14,546 schools.
