Korea Concerned about Radioactivity at Tokyo 2020 Facility

The Republic of Korea is concerned about possible radioactivity in training camps for its athletes to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and will examine in situ levels of nuclear radiation, assured Wednesday the Sports Minister, Park Yang Woo. The issue will be analyzed within the Sports and Olympic Committee of South Korea, revealed Park to a parliamentary committee, according to the Yonhap local official news agency.

Such an analysis will be undertaken since the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee announced that the diet to be served to athletes at the Summer Games will include agricultural products from Fukushima.

Park told lawmakers that he will consult with the International Olympic Committee and other agencies to ensure the safety of South Korean athletes and ensure that the upcoming Olympics are held in a safe environment.

In March 2011, the Fukushima nuclear plant collapsed due to a seaquake that caused a tsunami that killed at least 19,000 people and displaced nearly half a million people, according to official figures from the International Federation of the Red Cross.
