Managua - More than 7,000 Reconciliation, Justice and Peace Commissions, a structure designed to help the country's society overcome the effects of the April 2018 coup attempt, have been established in Nicaragua.

The objective of the commissions is to foster a culture of dialogue, understanding, and peaceful and harmonious coexistence among Nicaraguans, Sandinista government official Carlos Emilio Lopez told Prensa Latina.

'The commissions are spaces for social action, to which all Nicaraguans can belong without distinction of ideology, religion, social class, etc. The only thing necessary is to love peace, want to contribute to its construction,' he said.

Having achieved that purpose, we can enjoy as a society the restitution of rights the country has enjoyed since 2007, when the FSLN returned to power, he noted.

'The coup attempt not only tried to oust the current state administration, but also that model of political, economic and social management, they wanted to disrupt that government system, but they did not succeed. However, social relations were fragmented,' the Sandinista parliamentarian stressed.

According to figures from the Truth, Justice and Peace Commission, the coup attempt resulted in the deaths of about 253 people, 2,018 injured and caused economic losses exceeding US$1 billion.
