Urban Agriculture Movement against the African Giant Snail

Artemisa, Cuba - Preventive actions for the control of the African Giant Snail are more frequent today due to the presence of this mollusk throughout the territory of San Antonio de los Baños. The authorities of the Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture Movement join these actions.
It is important to detect them not only in those humid and shady places where organic matter exists, because it is an agricultural pest with a great impact on human health as a carrier and transmitter of dangerous diseases.
According to Yaima Hernández, director of the Urban Farm, there is a proliferation of the African Giant Snail mainly in the agricultural areas of the Urban Center Council in San Antonio de los Baños. They have been seen in patios and plots of individual producers, as urban farms also have favorable conditions for their reproduction.
The promoters of the agriculture sector are carrying out preventive work on farms and places dedicated to agricultural activity. Peasants are informed about the snail's damage to some foods such as vegetables and fruit trees. With safety measures the snails are collected, the shells are buried and subsequently burned, in order to eliminate the possibility of their reproduction.
Since this plague appeared in our territory, conferences were held by specialists, dedicated to producers, as part of the visits of the National Group of Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture. In the next tour, scheduled for December 11 and 12, one of the elements to be taken into account will be its control, as a priority not only in the Ariguanabo, but throughout the country.
