Talking about baseball with an expert is always a pleasure. This is the case of coach Joel Fuentes from San Antonio , a passionate about balls and strikes who is in charge of 11-12 years category municipal team , the ones that he expect to turn into champions.
“Those children have been with me since 9-10 category and they have got several good results in championships inside and outside the province. We were in third place in the provincial championship and five of them were called to the Artemisa team to the national games.
“Thanks to these results, they also called me to the management staff of the small Hunters team and they chose me the best coach of collective sports in San Antonio de los Baños in 2018. There we reached second place and qualified for the national final, which has not been celebrated due to several drawbacks.
"We really accomplished many things, it is a shame that the children have not been able to compete for the title, we are waiting for a date for that championship, however we are still training and now we are going for more."
In your opinion, what happens to children's baseball in Cuba?
“The main thing is the little attention to the base, which guarantees that famous pyramid where baseball stars and champions of the future will come from. Without balls, without implements, without caps, with parents making great efforts to get a suit… it is very difficult to keep children focused only on baseball, and therefore achieve a solid structure. ”
Has it been the secret of San Antonio for so many good results?
“Yes, in our municipality, baseball is passion and we work hard with children. We have a large group of coaches, focused on it and who loves baseball . That work has got good results with excellent players and then with several provincial titles. ”
With coaches like Joel, people who put effort and love into their profession, the good results, the future baseball champions from San Antonio and Cazadores team are guaranteed.
