Russian Foreign Minister denounces US aims to destabilize Syria

Nur-Sultan - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov denounced this Wednesday the illegal presence of US troops in Syria, questioned US withdrawal from that country and warned the US was playing 'very dangerous games' with the Syrian Kurds.

After a meeting here with his Kazakh counterpart Mujtar Tleuberdi, the Russian diplomat stressed that the steps taken by the White House in northwestern Syria, where the US created Kurdish semi-State structures, violate the UN Security Council resolutions on that nation and seek to destabilize the Arab country.

This situation threatens, above all, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria where, he assured, the United States maintains military bases illegally, in which terrorists and extremists meet.

In addition, the extreme flippancy of the US in dealing with the Kurdish issue could lead to an unprecedented confrontation in the region, Lavrov warned.

The Kurdish community is scattered across territories of Syria, Turkey, Iran and Iraq, local press highlight.

Russian Foreign Minister questioned, on the other hand, the reliability of a new announcement by US President Donald Trump that he would withdraw troops from Syria, and noted that there is always a pretext found to prevent such a withdrawal.

Lavrov's statements came after Ankara began an escalation of attacks yesterday with the use of combat aircraft, that could be seconded today with a ground operation in the Syrian north, amid Damascus' condemnation of that aggression.

In the US, several congress members threatened to impose sanctions on Ankara for launching the aforementioned operation, despite the fact that the US maintains military bases in Syria without a UN mandate or an agreement with the Syrian government.

Russia also called on Turkey to avoid a violation of basic principles of the solution of the Syrian conflict, and respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
