Artemisa, Cuba - With the triumph of the Cuban Revolution and the nationalization of companies, the National Electric Union (UNE) or Electric Company, as it is commonly known, emerges. The company has provided its services to the Cuban population for 60 years.
From its beginnings, the UNE, always ascending, offered electric power supply, even in the most remote areas of the national territory. During the special period, due to the resurgence of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the government of the United States of America against Cuba, the collapse of the socialist camp and the need to use national crude fuel, power generation was seriously affected .
Currently the service is more efficient. Of the 6 million tons of oil consumed in the country, more than half is destined to the electric power generated in the thermoelectric power plants. This has greatly reduced the blackouts in Cuba.
Thanks to the response of the Cuban people to energy saving measures, promoted by the Cuban Government since September 11, energy consumption has been significantly reduced, compared to the usual demand during this time of year. The entire country is focused on saving, as requested by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
But it is not enough just with the efforts made by the Cuban state to have a quality service, all citizens must contribute to energy savings. Joining is the alternative; the best response will continue to be given by the Cuban people.
