Cubans achieve first victories in the World Youth Chess Championship

New Delhi - Cuban Grandmaster Carlos Daniel Albornoz (2581) and his compatriot International Master Roxangel Obregon (2267) won their first World Youth Chess Championship in New Delhi on Thursday.
Albornoz, an 18-year-old chess player who is also the current absolute champion of Cuba, beat Norwegian MF Olav Risting Eivind (2289) in the first of two rounds played today in this under-20s tournament, and is now tied for places 39 to 63 with 24 other players totaling 1.5 units.
At the end of the third round, Spanish GM Miguel Santos Ruiz (2560) and Ukrainian GM Evgeny Shtembuliak (2577) top the open section with three points.
Santos beat Mongolian FIDE Master Ganzorig Amartuvshin (2391) in the third round with black pieces, while Shtembuliak beat Sergey Drygalov (2470) with white.
For the women's team, the Cuban IM Roxangel Obregon (2267) beat Brazilian Isabelle Tamarosi (2029) with black figures, and now adds a line and a half of three possible, awaiting the results of the fourth round played this afternoon.
Obregon marches in a multiple tie from 34th place to 62nd place, with 28 other players.
The female group is momentarily led by five undefeated girls, the Mongolian MF Boldbaatar Altantuya (2277), Indian IM Arpita Mukherjee (2271) and Priyanka Nutakki (2248), as well as Iranian IM Mobina Alinasab (2239) and Israeli MF Michelle Katkov (2106).
The World Youth Championship is played in 11 rounds by the Swiss System and brings together in its open section 94 players, including 15 grandmasters. There are 95 players competing in the girls' tournament.
