Cuban president holds bilateral meetings at NAM summit

Baku - Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez met with leaders from India, Iran and Equatorial Guinea, in the framework of the 18th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit that will conclude in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Saturday.

Diaz-Canel met on Friday with Indian Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Iranian President Hassan Rohani and Equatorial Guinean President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, with whom he addressed bilateral and international issues.

The Cuban head of State wrote on his Twitter account that the talks showed their interest in strengthening and expanding bilateral relations.

Cuba and India have maintained economic ties mainly related to the pharmaceutical industry, since the Caribbean island acquires medical products in that Asian nation, which hosted syllabuses for NAM member countries.

In the case of Equatorial Guinea, close cooperation has been maintained in the healthcare sector, since a Cuban Medical Brigade is working in the only African nation where Spanish language is spoken. In addition, there are commercial ties in fishing, mining and the environment.

Cuba and Iran cooperate not only at the political level, but they also have common positions in many international issues. They collaborate in the commercial, banking, agricultural, medical and cultural spheres.

Diaz-Canel's participation in the NAM Summit in Azerbaijan, where he was welcomed by President Ilham Aliyev on Thursday, is part of a European tour that has already taken him to Ireland and Belarus, and will conclude with a working visit to Russia.
