Cuban ambassador speaks on blockade at University of Serbia

Belgrade - The US blockade and its consequences for the economy and the population of his country were the focus of a talk by Cuban ambassador to Serbia, Gustavo Trista del Todo, at the University of Nis.

Invited by Goran Obradovic, dean of the Law Faculty at that higher education center in Belgrade, the Cuban diplomat spoke on Tuesday in front of a large group of students about the history of the Cuba-United States relations in the last 60 years and the aggressiveness of the governments of that country.

Trista del Todo recalled that since the triumph of the Revolution on January 1, 1959, the United States declared war on Cuba and the first aggressive measures were applied in June of that year by President Dwight Eisenhower, who broke off relations in January 1961 before concluding his term.

He also referred to the invasion on Playa Giron (Bay of Pigs), in central Cuba, in April 1961, the implementation of the blockade in February 1962 and the October missile crisis the same year during the administration of John F. Kennedy.

All that was Washington's response to the measures in benefit of the large majorities adopted by the revolutionary government and the aggressive actions carried out since then were destined to suffocate the country in an attempt to get the people uprising in the face of the hardships caused, the ambassador said.

The visit opened a lively dialogue with Dean Obradovic and other authorities of that Faculty.
