Criticisms of human rights violations continue in Chile

Santiago, Chile - Human rights violations are the focus of attention by international and local organizations in Chile, due to disproportionate repression by police forces against demonstrators.

The newspaper El Siglo, published by the Communist Party of Chile, said in an editorial that this negative human rights situation had not occurred since the end of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990).

It added that those violations skyrocketed after the decision by President Sebastian Piñera and his Government to deploy the Army on the streets to repress social demonstrators, declare the state of emergency, implement a curfew and authorize the repressive work of the Carabineers.

The newspaper added that this 'reconfirms that the right-wing governments and sectors do not change when resorting to repressive force and authoritarian measures, and specifically to the Army, when major social demonstrations take place, as citizen's expressions of high intensity, and popular and democratic demands are made.'

For the dramatic events of deaths, injures, torture, sexual abuses and aggressions of all kinds in which the Carabineers and the military have participated, the Government and particularly the president and authorities from the Interior Ministry have political responsibility, El Siglo denounced.

It added that it is a priority to end the aggressions and abuses by the Carabineers and other State institutions, and that such violations are investigated and sanctioned, otherwise any intentions to restore 'normality' in the country and find solutions and responses to the citizens' voice will be incomplete.
