Cuba to seek better Rio-2016 results at Tokyo Olympics

Paris - Cuba will attend the 32th Tokyo-2020 Olympic Games with the objective of improving its results from the previous event, Rio de Janeiro-2016, said on Friday the first vice-president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder), Raul Fornes.

In statements to Prensa Latina in the capital, the official recalled that in the Brazilian city the island's delegation finished 18th among more than 200 participants, with five gold medals, two silver medals and four bronze medals.

We are not defining numbers and colors of the awards, only reiterating our commitment to work to improve the performance of then, insisted the also deputy to the National Assembly, who participated at UNESCO headquarters in the seventh Conference of the Parties to the International Convention against Doping in Sport.

According to Fornes, efforts are focused on the classification of athletes for Tokyo-2020 and their training, a process that includes the selection of training bases.

The first vice-president of the Inder says that studies indicate that Cuba could travel to the Japanese capital with a delegation similar to the one that competed in Rio-2016, around 120 athletes.

Fornes pointed out that in the case of Cuba, sports results must always be seen in the light of the difficult context it faces, as a result of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States six decades ago.

However, he affirmed that the blockade has not succeeded nor will it succeed in stopping the development of Cuba, which thanks to the revolution ranks 16th in the historic medal of the Olympic Games, with 77 titles, only surpassed by the United States in the American continent.
