New York City Councilors demand an end to the blockade against Cuba

New York - Just when there are few days left before the UN General Assembly addresses the demand to end the US blockade against Cuba, several New York councilors are pushing for a resolution demanding the same.

At a public hearing at the New York City Town Hall, councilors and several members of the civil society conveyed their views on the US hostility toward the neighboring island and the damage it causes to both the people of Cuba and the United States.

'We must increase the pressure to put to an end to the blockade,' said Democratic Councilwoman Ydanis Rodriguez, one of the promoters of the resolution calling for lifting that hostile policy and also the travel restrictions for Americans to come to the island. New York is a city that has a close relationship with Cuba, she said, recalling the visits of Revolution leader, Fidel Castro, to the Bronx and Harlem.

The time has come to put an end to the blockade, imposed in 1961 by the United States government as a measure to 'punish' the Cuban people and which, to date, hinders normal relations with the island, Rodríguez stressed.

Other councilors joined her call in asking the US Congress 'to write a new page in the history of international relations by restoring normal ties with Cuba.'

Councilwoman Inez Barron and Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer expressed the US blockade damages people and it is necessary to eliminate such a policy as soon as possible.

Likewise, strong criticisms of the Trump administration were heard at the Town Hall meeting on October 321, demanding the White House to cease increasingly hostile measures against Cuba that keep it from developing.
