Colombia's Unemployment Committee promotes more protest actions

Bogota - The Colombian Unemployment Committee is promoting more protest actions this Wednesday, after the massive national march on November 21 and the mobilizations that followed.

In the last five days thousands of Colombians demonstrated in the streets and squares of the country in rejection of the government, against violence and in demand for effective policies in areas such as education, health, employment and the environment.

The Central Unitary of Workers (CUT) informed that the Committee will meet this Tuesday to promote new tasks.

In the meetings of the Committee has been participating the alternative bench in the Congress of the Republic and the citizen movement Defend the Peace, it said.

After the successful national strike of November 21, the government of Ivan Duque has not resolved in concrete any of the reasons for this mobilization and the National Police continues to use excessive force against the demonstrators and the population in general, stressed the CUT, one of the organizers of this massive initiative.

No less serious is the detestable attempt to sow panic among the citizenry with actions of vandals of dubious origin, all matters that should be investigated by the Attorney General's Office, the Attorney General's Office and other control entities to know what were the directives of the national government and the armed forces in these events, he said.

According to the CUT, 'the organizers of the national strike were consistent throughout the protest in disqualifying the violence, isolating and denouncing those who commit acts of vandalism, which gives us greater authority to disqualify the repressive and intimidating treatment that the government of President Duque has given to this multitudinous and peaceful protest.

The forcefulness of the November 21 strike and the reasons invoked for its realization have allowed many sectors of the population to continue demonstrating through extraordinary pots and pans, sit-ins, and other creative and peaceful ways of protesting, he emphasized.

Under such conditions, the Unemployment Committee was convened this Tuesday at the Casa de Nariño (headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic).

The convocation takes place in the context of what Duke called a national conversation, which began after massive protests.

Employment, education, peace with legality, the fight against corruption, the environment and institutional strengthening are the main themes of the national conversation, which is scheduled for March 15.

However, the local leaders insist on the importance of accelerating this dialogue.
