Santiago de Cuba - Floral wreaths were laid on Monday on behalf of the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, Army General Raul Castro, President Miguel Diaz-Canel, and the people of Cuba, as part of the tributes to mark the 63rd anniversary of the landing of the Granma yacht.
The act, which also recalls the foundation of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, was held in the Santa Ifigenia patrimonial cemetery and headed by the main authorities of the province and included a representation of Santiago residents.
The wreaths were laid at the funerary monuments to Cuba's National Hero, Jose Marti, and the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro.
The ceremony also recognized Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, initiator of the struggle for independence, in 1868; and Mariana Grajales, considered the Mother of the Homeland, whose mortal remains also rest in this cemetery.
On this date in 1956, the Granma yacht arrived from Mexico at the beach of Las Coloradas, on the southeast coast of the current province of Granma, with 82 expeditionaries aboard led by Fidel Castro. It marked the start of the armed sruggle against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.
Early in the morning, young people from that eastern territory re-enacted the landing at the same site on the south coast. As part of these historical events, two days earlier, on November 30, Santiago saw an uprising with the aim of supporting the arrival of the expeditionaries, an objective that although frustrated by various setbacks, demonstrated the insurrectionary spirit in the country.
