Hope´s beats in Mariel Township

When the work´s last details are completed, Orlando Santana Polyclinic will have more than 20 specialties, including international offices in Mariel Special Development Zone.

For locals this has been the materialization of a dream that brings about well-being and confidence. Those who saw it before, and now stop to observe every place - despite dust, scaffold or drills´sound in the distance - recognize that comfort will be the most outstanding feature when they officially inaugurate Orlando Santana Integral Teaching Polyclinic, in the north of Artemisa province.

In May 2018, it started what would be an infrastructure reparation , but in 2019 they decided to turn that into investment, financed by companies´one percent contribution to local development.

Thus, new areas began to be designed, they got up-to-date technologies that will make the diagnosis of pathologies more effective, and extended their services to the Mariel Special Development Zone, all this without affecting the daily medical routine, whose attention until late October assisted 4 300 patients.

Roberto Morales Ojeda, vice president of the Council of Ministers, closely follows the entity´s reparation. From the start of construction work, Morales calls to improve the sector´s services with the quality and professionalism they need.

This commitment and workers´ devotions outstand among many satisfactions with the proper culture of detail and the companies collaboration such as Marmoles Occidente Basic Unit Enterprise(UEB).

Gradually each block, piece of wood or marble, equipment and utensils, make sense. There the imperious will of the Revolution built to meet the people´s needs . While hopes is shown on the doctor´s faces, patients keeps the infinite satisfaction of living.

Let's walk

Completely resolving any disability is another benefit of the entity , after putting into operation its Integral Rehabilitation Ward.

“Among the several specialties, physiatry, podiatry, nutrition and defectology consultations, electrotherapy, physical and natural medicine stand out. It also highlights ozone therapy, for the well-being of patients suffering osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, high blood pressure and dermatological diseases, ”said Miriamy Milián Machado, head of the department.

World statistics estimate rehabilitation consultations ranging from 200 to 650 dollars, according to the diagnosis. In Cuba, after the program was created by Commander Fidel Castro, the Government pay the expenses , and every year the rehabilitated walk with as much skill as the others.

Little Katerine Mezquía and her family have too much to tell about it. She suffers from a left dorsal kyphoscoliosis, whose description points to curvatures of the spine ... and that must be solved for proper organic functioning.

In the afternoons, at the end of school, she goes to the children's gym and correct the positions with specialists. “After studying the case, they begin to practice exercises that will gradually return the posture to the girl,” said Milián Machado.

Women also matter

The incorporation of the Maternal Home to the polyclinic infrastructure improves the care for pregnant women sent from the clinics due to preconception risks.

They also have televisions in each room, padded beds with more comfort, personal fans, electric hot showers and a balanced diet in the dining room.

According to Dr. Roberto Ramos Blanco, “27 women remain hospitalized due to risks of prematurity, vaginal infections, anemia, and one of them with twin pregnancy. All receive the treatment required to modify the aforementioned factors, avoid low birth weight and reduce morbidity, both in primary health care and secondary care. ”

Modern equipment

From the investment made, the institution acquired modern medical devices so that the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of pathologies are safer and more effective.

"We have third-dimensional ultrasound equipment (3D), which detects - through the Doppler effect - congenital malformations up to three weeks of pregnancy," said Violeidys Báez González, director of the polyclinic.

“Before, this evaluation could only be done when the pregnant woman was 20 weeks of pregnancy ; its use facilitates the rapid action, and even replace radiographic methods to study other organs.

“Our services includes the Mariel Special Development Zone, where there are three offices with doctors and nurses (24 hours), a mobile office (eight hours) and an international one, where foreign personnel go . The latter includes a pharmacy and stomatological clinic; in addition, the area has a full-time ambulance for emergencies , ”Baez said.

"Two general medicine wards with 40 beds were opened in March 2019, for patients with respiratory diseases (of considerable incidence due to the industrialization of the territory), uncomplicated cerebrovascular diseases, urinary, skin, diabetic and hypertensive infections," said the graduate Annarella Núñez Pérez, supervisor of the polyclinic.

“We have received more than 150 admissions since its opening and the current possibilities are endless, mainly in direct treatment, without transferring locals to hospitals in the province or Havana city . There is comfort, they have good medication coverage and medical care is provided by clinicians (specialists in Internal Medicine), ”Baez said.

Mariel develops for its people´s wellbeing . Those who come to work or be treated at Orlando Santana must preserve what has cost too much effort. They both have to take care of this polyclinic that offers the cure to any suffering, where hope beats as a whirlwind of happiness.
