Social unrest takes Colombia's streets

Bogota - Colombia has over two weeks of protests, mostly peaceful, in rejection of government policies, against violence and for peace.

Gatherings cheered up by cultural performances, rallies, pot-banging protests and even a cycle route of resistance, are some of the initiatives that have taken place in several areas, especially in the most important cities such as Cali, Medellin, Cartagena, Barranquilla and Bogota.

Protesters raised posters claiming 'no more children, indigenous and ex-guerrillas assassinated,' 'Protest is a right, repression is a crime.' The latter refers to what several voices consider excessive use of force by the authorities during demonstrations.

It is necessary that the government listen to the people and work according to the needs of people, one of the protesters told Prensa Latina after 16 months of the start of President Ivan Duque's term.

Others agreed that it is not a matter of left or right but that people need good governance.

Since the massive national strike on November 21, described as historic by the wide participation and by the diversity of sectors represented, these protest actions have been taking place, especially in Bogota.

This week the streets of the country witnessed another national strike in which thousands of people expressed their disagreement and demanded deep reforms in areas such as education, health, environment and security.
