Because of the visible passion in her eyes, few people imagine that she talks about fruit trees, but it is that Caridad María Noriega Carrera cannot help talking like that, because she has dedicated almost 35 years to research in order to obtain the best and most nutritious from each plant fruits.
From the Basic Technological Scientific Fruit Unit, in Alquízar, this woman from Guira has contributed a lot, first focused on citrus studies that were put to the test in the Ceiba Citrus Company and in recent years with other fruits more or less present but very important for our food.
Talking to her is like attending a plant physiology lesson , a subject in which she is already a master in science. Her studies have allowed economic benefits for the country over the years. They highlight her contributions with another group of professionals to advance the grapefruit harvest back in the 80s and thus achieve its insertion in the European market much earlier than others.
She also recalls other achievements such as raising the yields of the tangan ortanique, a fruit of high demand but with limited productions, and the joint work with Alquízar Agricultural Company to promote the cultivation strawberry, in order to substitute imports in tourism.
From lab to field
Cary, as her coworkers call her , is not in a laboratory all the time, as many can imagine. Her tasks are shared between the study, physiological analysis of each plant and the direct exchange with them in their environment, because that is where each project starts and where they return after to put it into practice and see results. Right now she studies the impact of climate change in the phenological phase of mango, an important and complex task that the entity assumes with the largest mango collection in the country.
In addition, as part of the Agrofrutales international cooperation project, tested in three municipalities in Artemisa, she is the leader of the technical team of mango chain in the territory.
This project is focused on promoting those cultivars that are most useful to industries, with a variety of proposals and a lot of nutrients, especially mango, guava and papaya.
In the Department of Genetic Improvement she takes part in studies and surveys of anonaceae such as anon and soursop, to increase the collection and retake these exotic fruits that both delighted our grandparents.
And if that were not enough, she is also in charge of the training of specialists, researchers and young technicians who are the relief.
It is a difficult task to do science with plants, because these are the ones that many times impose a specific schedule on Cary. Pollinating an artificial plant demands to be home late and wake up long before the sun; to get the best fruits from each one implies to treat each bush well, to assist it in the right moment and to be aware of every detail, as if it were a child.
This woman of science from Artemisa does all science, without neglecting the family that she has created and makes her so proud. To her two children, her husband and two grandchildren, she also appreciates the understanding and help in all these years, especially when her tasks have taken her away from home in search of other fruit species, or to study the behaviors of plants in other regions of the country.
Devotion , sacrifice, love and much research are mixed in this woman, who today personifies in these lines all the people who do science in Cuba for the development of the country and make their knowledge, free of charge, available to the people.
