Artemisa, Cuba - Organic farms contribute to food production in San Antonio de los Baños by using agroecological techniques and controlling the African Giant Snail, considered an agricultural pest.
The Intensive Garden of the Augusto César Sandino Agricultural Production Cooperative stands out, since hydroponics is applied, a novel method put into practice by Cuban agriculture.
With this method plants are grown using mineral solutions instead of agricultural soil. There, very important products are harvested for the consumption of the people of Ariguanabo including tomato, lettuce, chard, Chinese cabbage, seasoning plants.
Organic matter and bioproducts are also used. Since the creation of the organic farm, the production of earthworm humus and the use of biological controls began simultaneously, through the effective control of various pests that affect crops.
The organic farm of the Augusto Cesar Sandino Agricultural Production Cooperative in San Antonio de los Baños is one of the best exponents of Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture in the territory.
The presence of the African Giant Snail has also been controlled in the Tres Hermanos organic farm, located in the Urban East People's Council, since it can consume about 250 species of plants. This Snail has been seen in Cuba in crops such as malanga and Mariposa flower, as well as in 30 other species.
