Artemisa, Cuba - The Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians (ACTAF) and the State Forest Service (SEF) will carry out an Environmental Project in the municipality of San Antonio de los Baños during 2020. The project responds to the problems faced by the Ariguanabo and Govea rivers, as well as the Cuenca Ariguanabo, in terms of soil erosion and deforestation.
The use of land for food production, deforestation of the area based on its identification as a recreational place and the poaching of the most valuable timber species gradually reduced the hydroregulatory strip of both rivers. Since these activities put some species of birds and mammals in danger of extinction having a negative environmental impact, this project is designed focused on working with young people.
Carrying out an analysis of the environmental problem by the Municipal Administration Council (CAM), planning a strategy that proposes solutions, as well as raising awareness among young people and training the municipal authorities, are the main objectives of the project.
As a main result of these actions, the development of plans related to reforestation, environmental education and agroforestry systems with a sustainable and agroecological approach is expected. Other expected results are: the articulation of actors and authorities of the territory, the integration of actions with the beneficiaries of the project and the consolidation of a strategy that responds to the environmental problem.
