Cuba implements New Urban Agenda to fulfill SDGs

Havana - Physical Planning Institute (IPF) President Samuel Rodiles Planas noted that Cuba is implementing the New Urban Agenda (NAU), one of the commitments to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

He underlined that for its execution, Cuba has designed a national action plan, one of the first in the world, which was acknowledged by the United Nations Program for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat).

The NAU has a transversal impact on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and 65% of its goals, and involves all spheres of life, above all the people's wellbeing and urban prosperity.

The NAU was approved by the UN and was signed by Cuba and other countries during the World Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III), held in Ecuador in 2016.

Rodiles Planas explained that the NAU allows integrating and articulating the objectives and vision of its different components in a process of participative work coordinated by the IPF, with support from UN-Habitat and Cuban associations linked to urban design.

He pointed out that the NAU was assumed as a challenged to be implemented in Cuba's context to move forward with economic, social, cultural and environmental equality, which will allow people to access decent houses and high-quality urban infrastructure.

In that regard, he underlined the importance of keeping the good levels of sustainability and resilience in human settlements.

The IPF president pointed out that the objective of implementing the NAU is to determine pertinent actions, policies and the priorities that will consolidate the cities and other human settlements as promoters of development.
