Colombian teachers are on strike against violence

Bogota - Colombia's teachers started this Thursday a 48-hour national strike to express their rejection of violence, an initiative convened by the Colombian Federation for Education Workers (FECODE).

The Federation's president Nelson Alarcon, called to join this action for defending life, peace and democracy, 'against murder, attacks, and threats to both our social, trade unions leaders and the Colombian teachers.'

Educators also demand guarantees for the teaching profession, the right to health with dignity for teachers and to obtain adequate funding for public education.

FECODE has been the trade union that has suffered the most victims in the context of the armed conflict, according to information spread during the presentation of its case to the Comprehensive System for Truth, Justice, Reparation and Guarantees of Non Repetition.

The report 'Life for education' includes thousands of incidents of violence from 1986 to 2016. Violence occurs in territories where there was armed conflict. They were not isolated cases, said Alejandra Garzón, a Federation technician.

In her opinion, 'the intention of the alleged perpetrators was to persecute teachers because of their trade union, pedagogical, political, social and community role.'

The aforementioned report emphasizes the process of victimization, persecution and attempted extermination of activist teachers affiliated with FECODE, refers the information disclosed.
