Havana - Eduardo Iturrizaga, from Venezuela, and Florencia Fernandez, from Argentina, on Monday became the champions of the Capablanca in Memoriam online chess tournament.
Iturrizaga, 30, play fast and calm on the www.lichess.com platform and score 7.5 points of nine in the Elite group, which included nine other Grand Masters, including four foreigners and five Cubans.
In the top group of the event, Iturrizaga won seven games, drew one and lost one to Cuban player Luis Ernesto Quesada, in three-minute games.
South America had other excellent performances by Alan Pichot and Leandro Krysa (Argentina), who scored 6.0 and 5.5 points and finished in the second and third positions, respectively.
They were followed by Cuban players Yasser Quesada (4.5), Omar Almeida (4.5) and Ernesto Quesada (4.5), while Spanish player Jose Fernando Cuenca (4.5) finished in the seventh place, ahead of Cuban National Champion Carlos Daniel Albornoz (4), Mexico's Luis Fernando Ibarra (2.4) and Cuba's Isan Ortiz (2).
More than 1,000 competitors participated in the Open groups and the results will be announced on Tuesday.
The event pays tribute every year to Jose Raul Capablanca (Cuba), who was the world champion between 1921 and 1927 and is considered one of the best players in the history of chess.
