Covid-19 claims more than 3,500 lives in Africa

The number of deaths from Covid-19 in Africa reached 3,596 on Wednesday and the number of infections 119,236, in a persistent rise that is causing concern at the UN and among specialists. The figures appear in the daily report of the Center for Disease Prevention on the continent, part of the African Union, whose headquarters are located in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, as is that of its predecessor, the Organization of African Unity.

Despite the seriousness of the organization, there is a perception that the statistics are incomplete because of the disparity in the way they are collected and, worse still, the cases in remote areas without sanitation systems, which die anonymously.

Another cause for concern is that at present contagion is occurring mainly in urban areas and social mobility, coupled with difficulties in imposing quarantine or restriction measures.

There has been little change in the order of the African countries with the highest number of infected people, with South Africa taking the lead with 24,264 cases, 649 of them and 43 deaths on Tuesday alone.

A compilation by Prensa Latina's South Africa correspondent details that the Western Cape province is the one with the highest number of infections, 15,829, followed by Gauteng -where this capital and the city of Johannesburg are located-, with 3,43; Eastern Cape, with 2,864; and KwaZulu-Natal with 1,927.
