Caracas - The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People's Free Trade (ALBA-TCP) agreed to coordinate efforts to prevent and confront the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the joint declaration of the Political and Economic Complementation councils of the bloc, held on Monday through a videoconference, the ALBA-TCP decided to prioritize the special needs of the small insular Caribbean States due to the health emergency.
The ministerial meeting proposed establishing national mechanisms to diagnose and isolate the alleged cases infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus rapidly, as well as coordinating advice mechanisms in the field of epidemiology, with an innovative medical approach to confront and mitigate Covid-19.
The bloc called to generate capacities to diagnose diseases that demand laboratories with an appropriate safety level.
In that regard, the ALBA-TCP member countries proposed to resume the implementation of a harmonized and centralized system to manufacture, register, regulate and certify the distribution of high-quality, low-cost medications within the bloc.
The Political and Economic Complementation councils demanded the immediate lifting of the unilateral coercive measures that prevent the countries affected by Covid-19 to fight the disease effectively.
They also agreed to give a new boost to integration as the engine of ALBA-TCP's political action by creating a new post-pandemic socioeconomic development model based on regional self-sufficiency to build a sustainable economy.
In order to do so, they agreed to foster the development of the ALBA-Petrocaribe complementary economic zone, a model of productive and technological development based on the principles of the People's Free Trade.
