Short-cycle crop production in Ariguanabo

Artemisa, Cuba - The production of short-cycle crops is one of the alternatives applied in agriculture, with the aim of taking advantage of the richness of the soil.

In San Antonio de los Baños, this type of plantation is promoted in areas belonging to the Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture Movement, although the root ball land dedicated to growing tobacco is also used to plant vegetables, mainly in the Basic Units of Cooperative Production in Ariguanabo.

There are several farms, orchards and organic urban farms that use short-cycle crops, with a shorter harvest season, inserted in an orchard already planted with another variety, also known as intercropping; Thus, the land with its nutrients is used, water and fertilizers are saved, speeding up production in that space.

Intensive orchards use this alternative, including the Augusto César Sandino Cooperative. Also in agroecological farms such as La Felicia and Domingo Cancio, dedicated to fruit trees. According to Yaima Hernández, director of the Urban Farm Base Business Unit, short-cycle crops are planted in the semi-protected area of the municipality, the organic urban farm "Tres Hermanos", and the orchard of the Jorge Dimitrov Agricultural Production Cooperative.

At this time of year, foods that require less than 3 months of harvest are prioritized, for example, vegetables such as green beans, okra, summer lettuce, chives, chili and garlic, as well as radish, which has a cycle of just 21 days.

In these lands, in addition to the intercropping of crops, the staging technique is carried out, that is, some of them are already being produced and others are planted to guarantee their presence throughout the year.
