Cuba spends nearly one billion pesos to fight Covid-19

Havana - Cuba had spent nearly one billion pesos until August, as part of measures to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, local media reported on Monday.

Deputy Prime Minister Alejandro Gil said at a meeting of the Council of Ministers that this number is associated, mainly, to various expenditures that have been assumed by the State Budget.

Gil, who is also the minister of Economy and Planning, noted that there has been a contraction of revenues during the period.

He pointed out that so far this year, some 366 million pesos from the State Budget went to the salaries of workers who stayed at home due to the new coronavirus.

When assessing the country's economic situation, the deputy prime minister referred to elements from 2019 that affects this year's indicators.

In that regard, he noted the little growth in investment, an aspect of strategic priority to reduce the country's dependence on imports and achieve food and energy sovereignty, and the nation's productive transformation.

Gil added that in addition to the real impact of the United States economic, commercial and financial blockade, there are domestic problems that are being faced with measures from the Economic and Social Strategy.

The crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has forced Cuban authorities to adjust the Economic Plan, recalled the minister, who mentioned the loss of revenues from exports, the decrease in imports of essential products and the difficulties to access foreign financial sources and commercial credits.

Gil stated that the Economic and Social Strategy contains the main working guidelines to order the development of the economy and continue to transform our economic and social model, to which the biggest effort must be dedicated.
