U.S. Companies Preparing Campaign for Links with Cuba

Washington -Representatives of U.S. companies are getting ready to support within Congress the regulations expected to be issued by the White House in order to relax commercial links with Cuba, an article in The Hill newspaper says today.

Spokespersons for several business groups hope an increased support within Congress to President Barack Obama's decision to change the policy towards Cuba as more people would get permission to travel there to materialize the process of rapprochement, says the journal.

The text, signed by journalist Lydia Wheeler, acknowledges that the president is implementing this "historic decision" through his executive faculties, but some transformation will have to overcome filibustering maneuvers in Congress.

Meanwhile, Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Visack, said recently that a resumption of trade exchanges with Cuba would mean an opportunity for U.S. producers, to whom a new market near U.S. borders would be opened.

Presidents Raul Castro (Cuba) and Barack Obama (United States) announced on December 17 the start of a process to resume diplomatic relations between their nattions, broken by Washington over 50 years ago.

Obama said he would take steps to increase trade, relax permits for U.S. citizens to travl to Cuba and order a study to erase Cuba from the list of countries that, in the U.S. Department of State's opinion, sponsor international terrorism.

On his address, Obama annouced his wish to work with Congress to eliminate the main obstacle to normalize bilateral relations, that is the economic, commercial, financial blockade imposed on Cuba for over half a century.
