The Quiñones: a Unique Family

Build a home, school or doctor's office is not easy. Although the property is small, it would be impossible to make it without proper logistics. A key link in this process, is the contribution of the quarry workers who spend hours and efforts to turn rocks into arids and create the foundation for a strong home.

At Luis Carrasco-Quiñones people´s council in Bahia Honda Township we can find the quarry bearing the same name, whose workers recognize that they are one big family. "If an appliance breaks we all devote ourselves to repair it . The facility began in 1975 and the devices are very old, "said Rolando Gonzalez, founder and assistant in the quarry.

"The quarry stopped working in July and August in 2014 by smashing of remoledor axis . We repaired it in Artemisa cement factory. Lack of raw materials (stone) also affected us due to difficulties with the borer machine, "said Maria Magdalena Núñez, the manager.

"Work is a source of sources, chisel, brush, creative, evocative, is a friend that joins, adds and smiles, and cure." This idea of José Martí could sum up the attitude of those workers who exceeded their commitments and contributed to the fulfillment of the province economic plan.

When the workers reached 20,654 cubic meters of arids planned for 2014, they assumed the production of other 2000 necessary in the Company for Building Materials in Artemisa to fulfill the plan. "We began working about 5:30 am and finished at 6:00 p.m. in the afternoon. Enthusiasm, discipline, unity and commitment prevailed in such a task , " the manager highlighted.

Located at Luis Carrasco deposit , the quarry becomes second home to Maria Magdalenea and her staff . "I began working as kitchen assistant 30 years ago. I was very inquisitive , I always wanted to learn and asked many questions when carrying food to the workers, "Maria admits.

Elena, as all they name her , took over management 17 years ago. According to Leonel Santana, operator and mechanic during 36 years in the quarry , the manager makes everything possible for us to devote the job.

This simple woman , knowledgeable in a profession that requires great dedication, feels a special pride for her coworkers. "Without them it would be impossible to keep the quarry working with such results." Maria emphasizes.

Her job has great impact on the keep the devices. The loader, vital to the functioning of the center, has 11 years of exploitation and looks new. "Maria demands for care and manage spare parts," says Severino Gonzalez, an operator.

According to geologist Julius Caesar Ravelo, limestone from Quiñones deposit meets the granulometry and resistance parameters required for any type of building material, well known features by the workers in the quarry. That is why they expect to provide more granite, artificial sand and gravel. Another mill would make them achieve that dream. However, by using the old mill , that great family do not cease to contribute to the province development.
