Potato Harvest Has Just Begun

Artemisa, Cuba - As usual , Amistad Cuba-Mexico agricultural cooperative , in Alquízar, began the potato harvest belonging to 2014-2015 campaign, in which the municipality expects to reach 7300 tons, exceeding in almost 3000 to those obtained in 2014, said Orisildo Guerra, director of the agricultural enterprise in this territory.

In this first stage they expect to harvest the national seed , with an estimated yield of 17 tons per hectare. In the case of the imported seed having higher yields, they will begin the harvest between March and April.

Although climatic conditions are more favorable than last season, it is needed to keep on taking care plantations. Armelio Salgado, director of Technical and Development in the company, said that this is a sensitive crop that needs proper phytosanitary resources and irrigation, to ensure yields.

Salgado also stated that they have the necessary personnel to ensure the harvest and have taken security measures in cooperatives so that potato arrives safely to their final goal.

In the current year the company planted 150 hectares more than the 2013-2014 season, hence the increase production volumes.
