Cuba Celebrates Fernando Birri's 90th Birthday

Havana - Professors and students of the San Antonio de los Baños International Film and TV School (EICTV) are celebrating the 90th birthday of who was its first director and founder: famous Argentinian filmmaker Fernando Birri.
The celebration, entitled "Para un señor muy viejo con alas enormes" (For a Very Old Man with Enormous Wings), expects tomorrow, day of his birthday, the presentation of the Birri Museum project in the apartment he lived during his stay in Cuba, and later the performance of Big Bang Callejero group.
The short films "Un cielo languido y olvidado" (A Languid and Forgotten Heaven) and "De miedos, vampiros y algo más" (Fears, Vampires and More), carried out by EICTV students in 1991 and 1988, respectively, in which Birri participated as an actor, will be screened.
Musicians of the Hermanos Saiz Association and winners of the Jojazz contest will close the festivities that started yesterday at the Havana's Pabellon Cuba exhibition center with the screening of the film "Paisaje devorado" (Landscape Devoured), by Eliseo Subiela, inspired on the life of the also poet, screenwriter and painter.
EICTV director Jeronimo Labrada told the press Birri's constant communication with that institution, which is now preparing his memories under the title of "Larga vida a la utopía del ojo y la oreja" (Long Live the Utopia of the Eye and Ear). The book, in editing process, will be launched in late 2015 during the 37th International Festival of New Latin American Cinema.
Resident in Italy for years, Birri was born on March 13, 1925 in the Argentinian city of Santa Fe.
